Lost in the mists of the Romney Marsh, Angela Marchmont stumbles upon the body of a woman whose face has been disfigured—presumably to prevent recognition. Who is she, and what was she doing out there in the middle of nowhere? The search for answers will take Angela from a grand stately home to London’s most fashionable—and disreputable—nightclub, and into a murky world of illegal drinking, jazz music and lost souls.

The Riddle at Gipsy Mile An Angela Marchmont Mystery Book 4 edition by Clara Benson Literature Fiction eBooks

This is my last Clara Benson (I read them out of order) and my favorite. There's a grand estate with a regal old lady owner and her weakling son and his hearty horsewoman girlfriend. But (Thank God!) we get to go to London and see a bit of the seedy underbelly of English life. It's not Dashiell Hammett or Raymond Chandler, but it's a welcome break from the tea-and-sherry brigade.

When the story opens Angela's driver (hunky William) is steering the Bentley toward the isolated cottage of a couple with whom Angela has reluctantly agreed to spend the weekend. Typically, she's been bullied into coming although she risks being cornered by England's most obnoxious female reporter, who's determined to scoop an interview with the elusive lady detective. The English countryside is notorious for its lack of road signs and GPS is far in the future. A damned good thing, too, or William might not have gotten lost and run into the herd of sheep and slid into the ditch and the body of the murdered woman would NEVER have been discovered and there would be no book.

Inspector Jameson is called in and the trail leads to an infamous London nightclub run by an elderly Chinese woman and her son. It's a favorite hangout of mad-cap heiresses and their hapless, well-bred escorts and the music is supplied by an American band of black musicians whose leader is an old friend of William. Clara seems to have been amazingly progressive for her time. Her non-white characters are human beings, not stereotypes and she pulls no punches about the racism which muddies the waters for our detectives - professional and amateur.

Angela's relationship with Inspector Jameson reminds me of Mary Roberts Rinehart's Miss Pinkerton and her Inspector Patton. They are colleagues with a hint of flirtation that could develop into a romance. Too bad Clara stopped writing before we found out. I am so sorry to see the end of this very good series. Benson may have been an amateur writer, but she had a gift for creating memorable characters and lively dialogue.

The Riddle at Gipsy Mile An Angela Marchmont Mystery Book 4 edition by Clara Benson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I do not for a moment believe the blurb that the novels were written by an enthusiastic amateur in the twenties. However as 'historical novels' they are quite entertaining. I cannot help seeing Julian Fellows as the author. I am working my way through the series. This particular novel has interesting, and authentic feeling references to the first world war, referred to as 'the war.' The writing is competent, though there is an absence of the politically incorrect language one would expect from the era. Nobody could be offended by the language or views expressed.
This is another interesting read featuring mature, amateur detective Angela Marchmont. Poor Angela, she doesn't seek out dead bodies, but somehow they find her. Angela and her chauffeur William are on their way to Kent to spend a couple of days with friends when they stumble upon the dead body of a young woman in a ditch. Her face has been severely disfigured. So starts number 4 in this series. It is just as engaging as the others. It is a light, cosy read similar in the vein to Agatha Christie's "Miss Marple". I am looking forward to number 5.
I am so glad I discovered Clara Benson's mysteries. Sadly, this is the last of her's currently available on the . I sincerely hope more will be made available soon. I put Clara Benson in the same category as other lady mystery authors I love, Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayer, and Margery Allingham. I had come to suspect I knew who was the guilty party. But I was not sure how it was all going to play out. That is one of my most favorite things about Ms. Benson's writing. I can figure it out, but not know how it's going to end! I love that!
Actually more a 4 1/2 but full marks to the publication of an author who apparently wrote extensively but was never published during her life time. I'd love to know more about the why of all that because it is noteworthy that she kept writing even though no books were being published (and thus no reviews, praise, devoted fans, and no money!).

She's really a good writer, observant and good at dialogue, character, descriptions and she writes with humor as well as compassion. I love these books and am glad that they were discovered and published.

This was the second of her books that I've read (also read The Murder at Sissingham Hall) and I've just finished The Mystery at Underwood House which is even better than the then the other two (although she writes very well about the dark underbelly of London late night clubs in Gipsy's Mile).

Her books would make great movies!
I stumbled across the first Angela Marchmont mystery in an ad. It was cheap, so I thought it worth a try. It was worth it. Though the Angela Marchmont books were written in the 20s, as well as being about the 20s, they feel only slightly dated, and the writing itself is quite good. I enjoyed the writing style a great deal. The mystery part generally is not particularly well done, though it is better in this book than in the first. In any case, the rest makes up for it. The characters are interesting, especially Angela. I keep wondering if her relationship to Inspector Jameson is more than it seems, but I can't tell.
The first time that I read this novel I enjoyed it profusely. Now, having read the whole series, it was nice to remember when Freddy was just starting out as a reporter, and before Angela knew... well, big events that happen in the future. This time, I had the audiobook (provided by the author when it was released), and I simply enjoyed every minute. I knew whodunit and what was going to happen, but I was still caught up in the drama and the lovely setting to the story. Elizabeth Klett's Audible performance is so charming and "British" that I wished, not for the first time, to be Angela Marchmont. Even if she keeps running into dead people everywhere she goes.
