DEAD Darkness Before Dawn Volume 8 TW Brown 9781940734149 Books

Darkness Before Dawn is my least favorite book in the series to date, which isn't to say it's a bad book, I still really enjoyed it. It has done nothing to reduce my enthusiasm for this series, just seemed to miss the mark a little to me. My biggest disappointment was the progress of Billy's group. After my favorite book in the series for them in Reborn, I felt like too much was rushed through with this group to pare them down and move them forward; the battle for La Grande really left me wanting more and not in a good way this time. And for fans of Jake the Marine, I was very...put off by his shift in behavior. Maybe it was Jon and Jesus' deaths or all of the horrors he's seen or a collection of it all, but he took a very sharp turn in this novel that didn't seem to fit.

The Vignettes are also getting a little stale in this book. I've kind of been waiting for Chad to finally make the wrong move while trying so desperately to connect with his daughter and he finally seemed to have done it...and then he miraculously escapes only to seemingly be on the verge of death again. His final chapter of the book seems like we know what's coming next, but maybe TW Brown will give us an interesting twist for him next go-round. I have never quite gotten into tale of Jody and the survivors in Hope, Arkansas, but the dilemma they are put into here does peak my interest for what's to come. I would personally like to see another turnover in some of the stories in this section, but will trust the author in their futures.

Kevin and his group once again get distracted from their quest to reach South Dakota. While I didn't like Billy's story much in this book, the action of Kevin's crew definitely kept things exciting. It seemed like they hardly had a dull moment, even though Kevin spends a large amount of time out of said action due to his cat experience at the end of Reborn. My final thought near the end of this book is that I would LOVE to see Trent pop up in the Vignettes in the next book, if nothing else than to see who really made the right choice between he and Kevin!

Anyone who does not read the Author's Notes at the beginning of the books is really missing a treat! I enjoy reading Mr. Brown's thoughts on the progress of the series, the feedback he has received from readers and sometimes whatever seems to be on his mind. But in this one, I got a laugh at his discussion of the child zombies; how he THOUGHT he made it obvious why they behave how they do, but the feedback he's received told him a very different tale. Awesome insight into his creative process and it shows that he really does pay attention to what his readers have to say.

Another disappointment to me has nothing to do with the book itself, but in the fact that I stumbled across this series (yes, pun intended) on Black Friday and have read nothing but these books since. And now, alas, I have caught up to TW Brown's progress and have to WAIT FOR THE NEXT BOOK:( Definitely a testament to your excellent work, sir, as I cannot wait for that time to come!

Context If you've invested in the DEAD series, then DBD fills out the final details of what transpired in the book prior. DBD is really the second half of various mini-stories which kicked off previously.

It's an easy read that you'll blitz through quickly. The only factor likely to slow you down is trying to remember who was who and doing what from the previous book. Because of this continuation tone there's relatively little by way of new significant and innovative story developments.

An attribute the author is reaching for is to present a slow n' easy transition from raw survival priorities towards the re-establishment of some nascent proto New Society communities. Which means old skool hardscrabble survivors are being pressured to recalibrate their values...the fifteen of yours for fifteen of ours deal is a hallmark of genius. Zombies aren't the challenge any more and become sideline botherations instead of the dire threat they once were.

Tone-wise I got an impression the author was writing against the clock to meet a publishing deadline. Scenes are relatively brief...sometimes to the point of sketchiness and the work really bustles along most of the time. Great (excessive?) use is made of "mini-cliffhangers" as a ploy to amp up (create?) the suspense that's generally otherwise lacking. Their early applications work okay but it's an artifice that soon palls and towards the end I began not to care very much.

Otherwise all the usual DEAD marque badges are present inconvenient characters are culled, the women generally remain as thinly drawn as ever; there's a kaleidoscope of criss-crossing sub-plots, and after a wobble the smug, god-complex Kevin returns at the end to make another one of his dodgy 5050 snap decisions.

The British end of the yarn with La Vix seemed a bit orphanish with nothing much at all happening of note apart from Gemma bailing. (Harlow, Essex caught my eye. I knew it well. It's what used to be called a New Town, built green-field in the 1950's...not the quintessential Olde Worlde English village hinted at in DBD.)

Overall I got the impression TW Brown wrote DBD to keep the reader-investment pot boiling, do bit of stage set up and clear the decks of impedimenta ready for the next book in his pre-announced twelve part saga. Three stars equals Satisfactory.
